brrrrrunch!

Do you miss brunch? I miss brunch. I miss it so that whenever I go back to the States, I eat brunch like a madwoman. I insist that everyone meet me for brunch and eat vegan cornmeal pancakes and hash browns and soysages and tofu scramble and drink potsful of coffee. I might also sneak some donuts in there. Dough naughts.

And one of these days I'm totally going to have another brunch party and everyone can come over and I'll make muffins and we'll listen to Desmond Dekker.
But anyway until then, you can go to Suji's. They have big-ass stacks of pancakes with all kinds of toppings and bottomless coffee and omelets and home fries and outdoor seating. It's in Roppongi and okay that's kind of a hike in the morning for me but actually they're open for brunch from 10-4 on weekends and I can make it by two or three probably. Then you can go to a museum or something.

  1. i miss brunch too. a lot. i grew up on bob evans on sunday mornings.

i'm willing to pay for meals at suji's because it always hits the spot. and sometimes that alone is worth it.

  2. I didn't find it any more expensive than brunch in the states or meals in other (non fast food) restaurants! It's just nice to be able to order pancakes, potatoes, and endless coffee sometimes. Once in awhile I gotta scratch the itch. Month and a half til I'm back in food paradise!

  3. Have you ever tried brunch at Roti near Roppongi Hills? I've only been to suji's for brunch once and thought it was OK but have wanted to give it another go...their sandwiches at dinner are super tasty. Anyway, Roti does a really nice brunch and is about the same price-wise. You can sit outside there too. I think TY Harbor does brunch too but it's a major mission to get down there, but sitting by the water is reward enough for me!

  4. Hmmmm... you had me until I saw "vegan cornmeal pancakes and hash browns and soysages and tofu scramble"... my meat-loving Adelaide/Sapporo heart nearly skipped a beat.... hmmm...

Having said that, whilst we've been trying for a second baby, I've been on a self-imposed vegetarian diet - at least 1 out of every 4 weeks.... so... perhaps it's looking better all the time. BTW - brunch is definitely not an Australian thing. We like order... 3-meals-a-day-kinda-order.

  5. Hey Green! No, I haven't tried Roti - at the name, I thought it was an Indian joint but upon looking up their website, I see that it's not! It looks really good... and I love that they mark all the veggie stuff. I'll definitely be checking it out, so thanks for the recommendation! Oh man. Now I'm really craving that Lebanese flat bread with tahini dip and the veggie burger too.

  6. Hey Ben,
Yeah, if you read my site you'll see I don't eat the animals and it's an oft-documented struggle here in Japan :) Actually I didn't have much trouble at all eating veg in Australia, despite ya'll's caveman-like tendencies ;)

The concept of brunch is to eat it when you're TOO LAZY to get out of bed in time to fit in three meals! I guess it's a pretty North American concept - I haven't see much of it in OZ or Europe or Asia.

  7. P.S. You don't like hash browns? Even the most fervent bacon eater likes hash browns!

  8. Selena, their feta omelette is scrumptious (wait, are you vegan?). Not brunch, but have you checked out Shamaim out in the semi-boonies of Western Tokyo? I have a feeling you like falafel and this place has it all. Also, if you haven't, check out http://www.alishan-organics.com, where you can order stuff like lentils and tahini. I'm hungry now!

  9. Green, thanks! I'm not vegan, but I do try to keep my egg consumption down. And YES! I have been to Shamaim - love it! So yummy and the staff is much more congenial than the falafel place in Tameike Sanno - though his falafel are quite good. I also like that Jewish deli in... drat, now I can't remember. But David's Deli: real grain breads! Bagels and pickles!

Thanks also for the alishan tip; I usually haul back a whole suitcase full of quinoa and almond butter, but I'm starting to run out of stuff and it's a couple months before I'm back in hippyville.
